LIHUE — A state tree-trimming project led to long traffic delays and unhappy motorists Wednesday on Kaumualii Highway.
The Department of Highway work took place between Halfway Bridge and the Kauai Humane Society from 8:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Because traffic was restricted to one lane through the work area, it led to hourlong delays.
“They weren’t even removing a fallen tree or anything like that, just cutting BUSHES,” one driver posted on the county’s Facebook site.
HDOT spokesman Tim Sakahara said that due to an oversight, the HDOT failed to notify the public and the county about the project.
“At this point we are very sorry for anyone who was impacted by this tree-trimming project,” Sakahara said.
HDOT is working to insure that communication improves on future projects, he said.
No additional tree trimming is scheduled in the immediate future.
