KALAHEO — The Kamikaze came up short on both of its matches and Team Central split its series Monday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center as the Kaulupono Summer Basketball League resumed its schedule following a break for the Merv Lopes Kauai Hoops Classic.
Team Central girls, playing in Division 1, fell, 35-10, by the Kauai Ballers — many of whom play for Kapaa High School.
Fighting a height disadvantage, the Kamikaze put up its strongest showing in the opening half led by the quick inside drives of Marissa Layosa, who bucketed four of the team’s seven points in the half. Ayzlin Kealoha-Albara lit the net with a trey in the second half, the only score allowed by the Ballers. She finished with four points and Sheryl Tomas added a pair in the effort.
Tori Daligcon set the pace for the Ballers, who netted 11 points, followed by Paea Tafea with nine points. Jaliyah Casem finished with six points, Tamare Daligcon added five, and four points by Jazmin Kaleiohi rounded out the win.
Kane Casillas fired off six points and Takeshi Komar netted five points to lead the Kamikaze boys to a 12-9 second half against Papalina. The effort, however, could not overcome a 25-6 Papalina first half and Papalina wrapped up a 36-18 win.
Casillas fired off 10 points to lead the Kamikaze effort with Komar adding seven points. Kampbell Hanano ended with a pair.
Trey Taba scored 10 points in the first half, including two from outside the three-point arc, en route to his game-high 13 points to lead the Papalina win. Taylon Yadao also netted a three-point bomb.
Christopher Cromartie and Jaykob Nakaahiki-Young each dropped five points, Iui Rivera ended with four, and Makana Tavita added three points in the win.
During the nightcap series, Logan Kashima scored 10 points and Tia Jaquias added seven points to lead Team Central to a 23-4 win over Central Hoops who got pairs from Henna Young and Annie Nizo.
Kaulupono stayed ahead of Team Central in the series opener. Braelyn Cayaban and Kaye Serapio lead the win with eight and six points, respectively. Tiana Joy Ramos and Kierstin Gummerus each finished with five points.
Team Central got its lead effort from Amalya Sales, who ended with eight points followed by Jasmyne Ballesteros and Bailey Perreira each netting four points. Caitlin Palacio had a pair in the effort.
