Police say confrontation preceded fatal collision

LIHUE — Police said Thursday there was a confrontation between two men shortly before a fatal collision early Monday.

Michael Helppie, 37, of Lawai, was struck and killed upon impact by an SUV driven by Evan Craft, 34, near the Kalapaki seawall along Nawiliwili Park, a press release said.

“Police believe Craft and Helppie got into some type of confrontation at a nearby bar just before 1:45 a.m.

The confrontation escalated outside when Craft’s SUV struck Helppie then ran over a concrete piling, where the SUV became stuck,” the release said.

Craft was located nearby at Kalapaki Beach and taken into custody.

He was arrested Tuesday for manslaughter and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, the release said, and was later released under pending investigation.

Police continue to investigate details of the incident.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Detective Jenkins at 241-1680.
