HANAPEPE — The Kapaa Diamonds, making their first appearance on the Junior Olympics 8 and Under softball field, finished the opening day of the West Kauai 8 and Under Softball Tournament with a 2-0 record.
Rolling behind a grand slam in the final inning, the Kapaa Diamonds took a 12-4 win over the Lihue Dragonflyz in the opening game, and followed it with a 10-3 win over the host West Kauai Little Ladies.
The winning streak was broken Saturday when the Diamonds suffered a 9-6 loss at the hands of the Hanapaa Minnies, a visiting team from Central Oahu. The loss gives Kapaa a 2-1 tournament record.
The Dragonflyz, undaunted by their opening loss to the Diamonds, rebounded to take a 15-11 win over the Hanapaa Minnies Saturday. But the momentum died as they suffered a 7-2 loss to the host West Kauai Little Ladies for a 1-2 record.
Similarly, the host West Kauai Little Ladies shared the same record, their sole win coming over the Dragonflyz Saturday. The visiting Hanapaa Minnies, with a win over the Diamonds, also finished 1-2.
Tournament director Leila Kamakele said the West Kauai Little Ladies will be traveling to Oahu to participate in a tournament with the Hanapaa Minnies and appreciates the support the team received from all of the tournament sponsors, most notably from Wally Rita Trucking, parents and volunteers.
