Kapaa freshman Jensen wins twice

PUHI — Twenty-five wrestlers weighed in Thursday at Island School during the third modified dual format wrestling meet.

Kapaa freshman Braeden Jensen won two matches on pins. His first came against Eosin Chelius of Island School, and took his second fall over Kauai’s Chaysen Alayvilla.

Another mixed team dual format wrestling match with all four KIF schools starts at 10 a.m. Saturday at Waimea High School.

Mac Pigott, KIF tournament director, said defending KIF champions who are currently undefeated heading into Saturday’s match include Kauai High School’s Kristopher Alcos in the 126 and 132 pound divisions, and Bryson Yoro in the 132 pound class.

Kauai’s Madison Leanio also is undefeated in the 145 and 152 pound classes.

“These are 2014 KIF champions looking to repeat in 2015,” Pigott said. “Waimea’s Andrew Evans, taking a fall from Island School’s Kenneth Niheu, is undefeated at 182 pounds, and his team mate Ian Garcia, undefeated at 220 pounds, are also looking to win KIF championships for the second year in a row.”

Pigott said the Kauai High School girls will be tough to unseed as they enter this final tournament ahead of the league championships because they are the dominant force in KIF girls wrestling.

Kaisa Ishikawa took her match by pin against Jordan Kahananui. Sanoe Kalama, working two matches, took her opening bout over Island School’s Summer Suttell by pin, and took her match over teammate Nika Tapucol, 7-5.

Kauai’s Naia Manintin overpowered Island School’s Damia Cain by pin, and Kauai’s Brianna Kaneshiro took a pin from teammate Sarah Matsunaga.
