Former Los Angeles Galaxy player and frequent Kauai visitor Kyle Nakazawa will host his fifth annual youth soccer camp this month in Kapaa.
He started the camp years ago to give Kauai’s youth an opportunity to interact with coaches who have played at the college and pro level and help them excel in the sport.
“I have family in Kapaa. I’ve always been on Kauai every chance I get away from soccer and school,” Nakazawa said in a phone interview. “I love the community of Kauai. They’ve always been supportive.”
Among the coaches attending will be Danny Califf, fomer USA men’s national team player and current scout for Major League Soccer’s Toronto FC, and Ryan Futagaki, former Chicago Fire player.
Jack McBean of the LA Galaxy is also scheduled to attend.
Mariko Strickland Lum, Anahola native, former standout at Long Beach state and former semipro player, will also be a featured instructor.
“Bringing high-level coaches here is really beneficial to players at a young age,” Nakazawa said. “I’ve been to a lot of camps on the Mainland. It really can’t compare to the camps on Kauai because of just how stoked the kids are and how grateful they are to be there.”
The camp will be held at the Lydgate Soccer Fields on Dec. 20-22 and will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The cost of half-day sessions is $90. Full-day sessions cost $130. Go to www.kylenakazawa.com to register. Email kylenakazawa@gmail.com for more information.
