Hurricane Ana passed by Kauai several weeks ago, but its effects are still being felt as the Kauai Pop Warner Football League attempts to make up the games called off because of the storm.
KPWFL Commissioner Teddy Arrojo said five games are on tap for Sunday at Vidinha Stadium starting at 8 a.m. when the Kekaha Titans Mighty Mites meet the Koloa Redskins.
This match will be followed by host Lihue Patriots Peewee taking on the Kekaha Titans starting at 10, followed by the Lihue Patriots MM taking on the Hanapepe Colts starting at noon.
The Kapaa Eagles Junior Midgets will take on the Hanapepe Colts in a make-up game at 2 p.m.
The finale comes at 4 p.m. when the undefeated Koloa Redskins Junior Peewee takes on the Hanapepe Colts.
“Koloa JPW is undefeated,” said Erik Burkman, Koloa MM coach. “The Redskins JPW beat Hanapepe once before, and this is their second meeting. If Koloa JPW wins, they are on the sure track for the division title. If Hanapepe were to win, there will be a tie for the lead in the division.”
Saturday, Arroyo and the KPWFL took the games to the Faye Park in Kekaha for the second straight year with five games on the calendar.
“Kekaha Pop Warner Association hosted the event which played under a very beautiful day with awesome weather, lots of food, exciting games, and great entertainment put on by our very own cheerleaders,” said Sherri Ephan. “The games were informal with announcers Arthur ‘Ata’ Brun and Ryan Silva walking along the sidelines, giving the teams a treat.”
Ephan said although scores and stats were not recorded, what made the event special was how the entire community was treated to a once-a-year event.
“It was so nice to see the many different faces who do not normally go to the games,” Ephan said. “There were many elderly who stopped by and found a nice shady area to view the excitement, and because there were a lot of shaded open areas and a big open park, families found their way to the park and ended up making a day of it.”
Arroyo said other make-up games, pending confirmation from the teams, include the Lihue and Kapaa Mitey Mites meeting Nov. 19 at Vidinha Stadium from 4 p.m., and the Lihue and Kapaa JPW meeting on Nov. 18 at Vidinha Stadium starting at 4 p.m.
