Kauai’s Rivera named KIF girls volleyball POY

As voted by the coaches, seven players were named this year’s Kauai Interscholastic Federation girls volleyball all-stars. Of the seven, five of them play for Kauai High School.

Among the Red Raider all-stars, senior outside hitter Jondee Rivera was named Player of the Year.

“I was surprised,” Rivera said in a phone interview following Kauai’s consolation game Thursday at the new Nissan City Girls Volleyball Championships — Division II tournament on Oahu. “It means a lot. Everyone says my hustle and heart showed. I just want to thank my team … Without them, I couldn’t be who I am today. They made me better.

“I just feel like we all know each other well. We’re all experienced,” Rivera added about there being five Red Raiders on this year’s all-star list. “We won together and lost together, and now were all-stars together.”

Kauai varsity girls volleyball head coach Dorene Matias said Rivera is a leader on the court and is deserving of such an accolade.

“She is probably one of the players that could play any position and be the best at it,” Matias said of her outside hitter. “She’s coachable, she listens and she tries new things. She’s an open individual that is willing to try new things to make her game better.”

Matias was also named this year’s KIF girls volleyball Coach of the Year.

“To quote coach Costa from Kapaa, ‘It takes a village.’ There were a lot of coaches that helped me get the girls ready for the KIF and states,” said the first-year Kauai coach. “It means a lot to me, but it took more than just myself to coach the girls.

“I thank the coaches for voting for me. This is a big wow for me,” Matias added.
