Kapaa man arrested for hit-and-run accident

KAPAA — Kauai police arrested Wilmar Caban, 30, of Kapaa, on suspicion of second-degree negligent injury and accidents involving substantial injury, the department said Tuesday.

Police suspect Caban is responsible for a hit-and-run accident that caused injuries to a female pedestrian in Kapaa Monday night. He has since been released pending an investigation.

According to police, a 75-year-old Kapaa woman was attempting to cross the highway near Honsador Lumber at around 7:40 p.m., when she was struck by an older model Honda Civic in the southbound lane. The vehicle failed to stop and render aid and police were unable to locate the driver following the collision.

Firefighters and medics treated the woman at the scene. She was subsequently transported to Wilcox Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
