LIHUE — With the anticipated arrival of Tropical Storm Iselle on Kauai late this afternoon, the Kauai Emergency Operations Center remains in full activation.
Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr., representatives from county, state and federal agencies on the island, including FEMA, along with other entities involved in emergency response have convened at the EOC and are ready to respond to any emergencies.
“All of the government agencies as well as others are working together to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors,” said Mayor Carvalho. “We ask the public to be vigilant, stayed tuned to the National Weather Service or the local media for updates, and to take care of their families, friends and neighbors, especially their kupuna.”
Emergency personnel and equipment have been staged north of the Hanalei River in case of flooding.
Residents and visitors are asked to stay off the roadways and shelter in place if at all possible.
Emergency shelters will be opened as needed. Please do not report to any shelter unless an announcement has been made that they are open.
The Port of Nawiliwili is open today, but land operations have been temporarily suspended.
All county beach parks remain closed due to potentially hazardous ocean conditions.
County offices and services will be open until 12 p.m. today.
The Kauai Bus will be operating on its normal schedule today until 12 p.m.
The Lihue Sunshine Market is cancelled for today.
All of the county’s refuse transfer stations and the Kekaha Landfill will close early today at 2 p.m. Thereafter, resumption of operations at these facilities will be determined by the impact of the approaching storms.
Residential garbage pick-up is continuing as scheduled today.
The eWaste collection scheduled this weekend at the Kauai Resource Center has been canceled.
The collection of obsolete or unwanted electronics, which is known as eWaste, will resume next month at the KRC on Sept. 12 and 13, 7:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.
Two of the HI-5 centers operated by Reynolds Recycling, Kapahi and Nawiliwili, is open today as scheduled. These centers as well as the one located in Lawai will be closed tomorrow.

The four HI-5 bottle redemption centers that are operated by Kauai Community Recycling Services (KCRS) are closed today to Monday, Aug. 11.
These centers are located in Kilauea behind the Kauai Mini-Golf, in Kapaa in the Arzadon Industrial Park, in Koloa near the fire station and Kekaha near the old sugar mill.

The Kauai Resource Center is closed today and tomorrow. Therefore, no HI-5 bottle redemption and commercial and residential non-HI-5 recycling will be available at the facility this weekend.
During the closure, commercial haulers should take their loads directly to Garden Island Disposal (GID), 2666 Niumalu Road in Lihue.
GID is open today from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is scheduled to open on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Any other changes to county operations will be announced.
All public schools on Kauai are closed today.
No coastal evacuations have been issued as of yet.
Evacuate only if directed to do so by local officials or if your home is vulnerable to high winds or flooding.
Persons living near the shore should be prepared to evacuate quickly if building surf threaten your home.
Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion as conditions can change quickly in a tropical cyclone.
At ports, docks and marinas, perform the prescribed preparations according to your emergency operations plan.
If you live on a boat, begin to safely secure your craft, and make plans to leave it for adequate land-based shelter.
Small craft should return to port or seek safe harbor.
The Tropical Storm Warning for Kauai and Niihau remains in effect until further notice.
