The Rookies downed the Barteks 10-3 to capture the title of the 2014 Kauai Senior Citizens Softball Association Saturday during a playoff game at the Wally Mito Sonoda Field in Kaumakani.
With the 2014 title, the Rookies will lead a contingent of 11 teams to the 39th annual Hawaii State Senior Softball Association tournament on Maui starting Tuesday.
Ron Matsumura picked up the win for the Rookies on the mound, but not before giving up three runs and 11 hits to the Barteks, who were lead by head coach Pat Baniaga.
Other Bartek slammers included Shapa Ramos, who finishing 2 for 3, and Sarge Soto, who went 3 for 3.
The Rookies were led by head coach Stan Dela Cruz, and had 19 hits.
Mel Yamase, finishing 3 for 4, Jim Bennett was 2 for 3, Russell Grady, 3 for 3, Ron Matsumura, 2 for 3, John Moniz 2 for 3 and Gerald Aqui 2 for 3.
Kauai Senior Citizens Softball Association teams joining the Rookies on Maui include the Kilauea Kruzers, East Kauai Gents, Kawaihau, Hanamaulu Hillsiders, the Lihue A’s, Ohana Rebels, West Kauai, Ohana, Kuku’s Aces, and Barteks.
