Police are investigating vandalism at public parks and are asking for the public’s assistance.
“Our most recent case involves theft of newly installed AstroTurf at Koloa Ball Park,” stated Department of Parks and Recreation Director Lenny Rapozo. “It’s incredibly disheartening to see this type of vandalism in our public parks, where our children play.”
A portion of the artificial turf at the playground was cut out and stolen. Parks officials believe the theft occurred sometime between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning.
The new surfacing was installed earlier this year as part of an islandwide playground resurfacing project. This particular playground resurfacing cost the county roughly $11,000 and will cost another $1,400 to replace the damaged portion. It is not known at this time when new AstroTurf can be installed.
In June, someone shattered a toilet in the men’s restroom at Kapaa Beach Park. The incident occurred sometime between Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8. Officials filed a police report, but there are no leads in the case. An investigation continues.
Police report that vandalism at public facilities is not uncommon. Sinks, toilets, picnic tables and seating are repeatedly damaged. Graffiti is another common occurrence, particularly in public restrooms.
“It is our community that ultimately pays the price for these crimes, and it gets to be expensive,” Rapozo said. “We are hoping the community can help us in ensuring that those responsible will be held accountable.”
