Vets get clean lounge at KCC

Rotarians from across Kauai came out in force to prepare the veterans’ lounge at Kauai Community College.

The lounge is part of a continuing effort at KCC to reach out to our returning veterans with information to learn about their after-service educational options and a place to simply relax.

About 10 Rotarians cleaned, patched and painted to get the space ready for the new academic year.

Rotarian Marion Paul said no group of people is more deserving of a warm welcome to KCC than veterans.

“The lounge will enable them to find camaraderie, share common experiences and support each other as they move into the next exciting phase of their lives,” she said.

Rotarian Mike Dexter-Smith said, “he loved helping our vets expand their options through education – and getting dirty. This is a Kauai-wide effort for Rotary.”

About $30,000 is still needed to buy furniture and equipment, and to make sure the lounge has some funds to continue, said Rotarian Chris Young.

“But the cleaning was an essential first step,” he said.
