LIHUE — Keeping a thermal record of your residence or workplace could help with preventing rising HVAC costs or equipment replacement and repairs.
Mark Mooney started Kauai Infrared out of his Kalaheo home two years ago after receiving his infrared thermography training and certification from the manufacturer to provide professional thermal monitoring for electrical and mechanical devices and buildings.
“We’re a full service thermal imaging company, right here on Kauai,” he said. “The camera will measure down to one-tenth of a degree between temperatures.”
So what’s a thermal scan of your place provide?
It pinpoints potential problems, that’s what.
Scans detect more than what is visible to the naked eye. Periodic infrared imagine can provide histories to show temperature changes in the building so it helps show where there may be a leak in a roof and moisture intrudes.
Knowing this helps eliminate mold, electrical safety issues and reduce energy bills.
The technology makes it possible to detect potential problems early on before they require more expensive repairs or replacement. It can measure the temperature of a surface and detect the variations that can reveal problems on and beneath surfaces.
“We live on the wettest place on the face of the planet, which leads to water intrusion problems and mold issues,” Mooney said.
The infrared camera senses the highest and lowest temperatures given off by a surface within its view range.
This allows for detection of energy loss, water infiltration on a roof, or it can spot anomalies given off by air conditioning motors, compressors and engines. It can also detect faulty moving parts and overloaded electrical connections that create resistance and heat.
“It is not just about taking the scan, but about interpreting what it represents,” Mooney said.
Rodent and insect infestations are detectable with infrared equipment, Mooney added.
They are hard to see under a surface or inside of a wall but are detectable in large nests or when they produce heat by digesting.
But finding the pests and getting rid of them is another thing. While Mooney interprets the results the scan provides, he doesn’t necessarily offer solutions.
“I am a finder and not a fixer,” Mooney said.
