KAPAA — The Kailua Majors All Stars will represent District 1 at the state Little League tournament which starts July 18 on Oahu.
The team clinched the local tournament title with a 13-6 romp over Kawaihau Wednesday behind 15 hits, including seven home runs, in a winner-take-all title game.
Kailua capitalized heavily on Kawaihau hurler Hailama Swartman who threw just 10 pitches, but during that span, gave up three runs and four hits, including a solo homer by Luke Hamacon and a 2-run home run by Aka Kapono.
Kawaihau answered with three runs on three hits, including a 3-run homer to right field by Ricky Rego, his first of two in the title game.
The gap could not be closed and Kailua continued to build on its lead before clinching the game with Hamacon’s second 2-run homer in the sixth inning.
The two teams had split a pair of games earlier this week, setting up the do-or-die showdown.
Adding to the explosive Kailua win, Noah Larson, Jayke Dolan, Pudget Amasiu, and Quinn McMurray, who hit two home runs, added to the Kailua base-rounders.
Following Rego’s pair of homers, Kawaihau, host for the District 1 tournament which started Friday, got a single from Levi Cummings, Noa Cardinez, Swartman and Kevin Flores.
