LIHUE — People driving by think this is only for veterans, but it’s not, said Aida Cruz of the Kauai Veterans Center on Kapule Highway in Lihue.
“This is the American Legion Post 54’s way of giving back to the community,” said Rhan Honjiyo, coordinator of the marketplace which opened Tuesday. “Eventually, we want this to be a marketplace for the people.”
Seth and Paulette Peterson of Kickshaw’s lunch wagon were busy dispensing orders Friday.
“We were down at the Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor and when we heard about this, we thought we would give it a try,” Paulette said. “Eventually, Rhan has a vision of this parking lot being filled with other food trucks and vendors.”
Bart Abbott was waiting on a table clinging to the shade of the Kickshaw’s wagon.
“I’ve had their food before, and it’s good,” Abbott said. “But when I went to Nawiliwili and heard they moved, I followed them here. It’s a lot more convenient to where I work. They have healthy food with local ingredients, and they always have a vegetarian selection.”
Cruz said applications for people interested in becoming part of the parking lot marketplace can visit the Kauai Veterans Center office, or call Rhan at 634-7498.
Rates have been established for daily operations with the spaces available from 6:30 a.m. until at least 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday through Friday. Nonprofit organizations wishing to host rummage sales will be allowed at no charge.
“This is good for people who are on fundraising where they can set up for a day, or a couple of days,” Cruz said. “We had a farmer here earlier this morning selling his vegetables until they ran out. Rhan said he wants food trucks to be able to do breakfast and lunch.”
Vendors are also responsible for their own booths and set up. Umbrellas, tables and chairs are allowed, within reason.
