KALAHEO — For Westside Basketball coach Dino Pabre, things got better after a rough start Monday night during the Kaulupono Summer Basketball league games at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
His WBC-B team, made of eighth and ninth grade Division 2 players, lost 57-13 to Hanakila, a team comprised of players primarily Division 1 high school students from the Hanalei and Kilauea. But in Pabre’s second outing, a Division 2 matchup against Papalina, Westside won 29-20. DJ Pabre led the effort with five points.
Noah Thompson, Brayden Miyamoto, and Noah Sasil topped the Papalina scoring with eight, seven, and six points, respectively, Thompson and Sasil both scored all of their game totals in the second half when Papalina outgunned Westside, 21-8.
Joel Soriano, held to just a pair against Hanakila, topped the Westside scoring with six points followed by DJ Pabre, being limited to just a digit against Hanakila, who had five points against Papalina.
Mar Cadiz, scoreless against Hanakila, ended with four points against Papalina with Kasen Castro, had high-point honors with six points against Hanakila.
The opening match of the night, a Division 4 game with fourth and fifth graders, proved to be just as exciting. Team Central rebounded from a 5-1 halftime deficit to win 14-12 over the Supersonics behind nine points from Raphaee Khaechawat, and pairs from Micah Agutanong, Doza Kaleiohi and Cameron Booth.
“Both teams played hard,” said Team Central coach Clarence Sales. “The baskets for both sides never came easy.”
Mayson Broyles and Bryce Fernandez led the Supersonics offense. Each player netted five points with Derick Soriano adding a pair.
