The Kauai Community College Band will perform its Spring Concert tonight, May 1, at 7 p.m. at the college’s Performing Arts Center. Featured on the program will be the Kauai All-Island Honor Band directed by guest conductor, Dr. Thomas Bingham.
The Kauai Community College Band will perform its Spring Concert tonight, May 1, at 7 p.m. at the college’s Performing Arts Center. Featured on the program will be the Kauai All-Island Honor Band directed by guest conductor, Dr. Thomas Bingham. The Honor Band selections will include “American River Songs” by Pierre LaPlante, as well as “The Best of Journey” by the rock band of the same name. Schools represented are Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School, Island School, Kauai High School, Waimea Canyon Middle School, and Waimea High School.
Dr. Bingham, a music professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa since 1991, has also served as dean of the College of Arts and Humanities on the Manoa campus. He regularly appears as a guest conductor and clinician throughout the country, and has conducted musical theater productions for the University of Hawaii and the Castle Theater Guild.
The KCC College Band is directed by Sarah Tochiki and will perform selections that include “Scenes from The Louvre” by Norman Dello Joio, “Colorado Peaks” by Dana Wilson, and “Nimrod” from Edward Elgar’s “Enigma Variations”.
Tochiki is also band director at Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School, and trumpet instructor at Punahou School. She received her master of music education degree from the College of Fine Arts at Boston University. Admission to this joint concert is free, but donations are accepted. • The KCC Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Barry Toy, will present its Spring Concert on Friday, May 3 at 7 p.m. at the KCC Performing Arts Center. Featured on the program will be the Rumba de Fuego instrumental and vocal ensemble, as well as the Jazz Ensemble as a whole. Some of the pieces that will be performed include “On a Clear Day You Can See Forever,” “Count Bubba’s Revenge”, “Blue Rondo a la Turk” by Dave Brubeck, and “Haven’t Met You Yet” by Michael Buble. • The KCC Symphony Orchestra will perform its Spring Concert on May 9, 7 p.m. at the KCC Performing Arts Center. The concert program was not available at press time. For more information, contact orchestra director Nina Saraos at 652-5374.
• On Thursday, May 8 at 2:30 p.m. the KCC Digital Media Arts program will host a lecture/seminar by Brian Jefcoat, a senior character modeler at DreamWorks Animation. He will discuss animation techniques and working in the field of animation. The lecture is open to the public and will be held in the Technology Center, Room 114.
• Greg Shepherd is an associate professor of music at Kauai Community College.
