After dropping its opener, 4-8, Kauai High School rebounded to take an 11-5 win over Kapaa High School Saturday at Kapaa High School.
Aleigha “Red” Scovel handled the mound duties for Kauai in Game 1. In the batter’s box, Scovel finished with a single and a triple, including an RBI in the third inning when Kauai took a 3-0 lead.
Catcher Tammie Yoshimori was credited with two RBI in the third frame on a Kapaa error.
Kauai upped the ante in the fourth frame when Kiana “Kiki” Pagador, the perky second baseman, whacked into the Raiders’ second RBI triple, scoring Mahealani Hirokane for the 4-0 lead.
Kapaa struck back in the fifth inning, pushing six runs across on two hits, singles from Jordan Lopez and Shayanna Rodero-Workman.
The Raiders’ pitching faltered as it hit a batter and gave up five walks while striking out one in the inning.
Anuhea Huddy marked her RBI on a fielder’s choice along with Kailana Kaiminauao while Tyra Alao, who got an RBI after being hit by a pitch. Aliyah Cummings and Kelsie Gorospe-Keliipuleole each marked RBI on walks.
Kapaa iced Game 1 in the sixth inning, pushing two more runs across on one hit, a two-run single from pitcher Kalia Kaui to score Cummings and Alao for the win.
Kaui topped the Kapaa hitting with a pair of singles and two RBI.
Following the break, Kauai lost little time getting on the board, pushing three runs on two hits in the first inning of Game 2.
Scovel got aboard on a walk followed by Kahela Nishikawa-Chandler getting first on a fielder’s choice, setting the stage a two-run single by Yoshimori.
Kailee Nii pushed Yoshimori home on an RBI single for a 3-0 lead.
Yoshimori increased the lead in the second frame, getting aboard on her second single of the day and scoring on a Chase Tokita RBI single with two away for the 4-0 lead.
Kauai pushed three more runs in the third inning on three hits for the 7-0 lead before Kapaa answered in the home half when Keisha Aki walked and scored on a Kaui fielder’s choice.
The Warriors were able to add a run in the fourth and fifth frames and two more behind a two-run homer by Kaui in the seventh inning for the 11-5 Kauai final.
Kaui powered into two homers, a solo affair in the fifth and a two-run event in the seventh, and added a single in the opening frame to lead the Kapaa bats.
Scovel tripled and singled with three RBI and scored three times to lead the Red Raider bats, Yoshimori adding three RBI on three hits, including a double in the fourth inning, and scoring twice.
Nii finished with three singles and an RBI as Kauai piled up 15 hits for its 11 runs, including a double from Cailey Caires in the third inning.
With the split, Kauai next hosts Waimea Wednesday in a single game at Isenberg Park starting at 5:30 p.m.
