KAPAA — Lorraine Nagai believes that when you work with children, the key is to teach them to love reading.
That’s why the academic coach for Kapaa Elementary School teachers has been a major proponent of the accelerated reader room at the school. She wanted to expand the choices children have when finding a book that suits their tastes and reading capability.
The Rotary Club of Kapaa is helping Nagai achieve her goal.
The organization presented a check for $11,000 to Kapaa Elementary last week to complete funding for a leveled reading library.
Nagai said the money will help the fill the gap between those who are just starting to read and more advanced readers.
“Very early readers don’t have books they can read from the regular school library,” she said. “Now, I’ll be spending lots of time color and grade-level coding over 2,000 volumes for the accelerated reading library, giving options for all of our students.”
Ron Margolis, president of the Rotary Club of Kapaa said, “This is an exceptional project inspired by the adopt-a-classroom program where organizations can donate $500 to buy supplies for classrooms.”
Proceeds from three musical events plus matching funds from Rotary District 5000 and The Literacy Club of Kapaa provided the accelerated book reader room.
