LIHUE — Tuesday marked the three-year anniversary of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan, which claimed more than 18,000 lives and resulted in the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
On Saturday, local officials and experts will discuss how the disaster affected Kauai, the debris it brought here and whether anything found was radioactive.
The free conference, “Aftermath: Fukushima Tsunami,” is from 9 a.m. to noon at Kauai Community College.
Speakers will include: Beth Tokioka, County of Kauai; Dr. Carl Berg, Surfrider Foundation, Kauai Capter; Dr. Henrieta Dulaiova, University of Hawaii, SOEST; Dr. Nikolai Maximenko, UH; Kyle Koyanagi, NOAA’s Marine Debris Program; Dr. Stephen Taylor, KCC, Marine Option Program.
The conference is hosted by the Surfrider Foundation, Kauai Chapter and the KCC Marina Option Program.
