KALAHEO — DJ Pabre of Westside Basketball fired a game-high 22 points to lead the team to a 37-27 win over Papalina Tuesday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
The match was one of three played in Division 3 for seventh and eighth graders in the county’s youth basketball league.
Papalina, who rolled to a 34-15 win over the Hanamaulu Gamers Monday night, stayed with the Westside boys and finished the half tied at 15.
Pabre exploded for 16 of his 22 points in the second half to pull the Westside boys ahead and sealed the deal with a pair of free throws in the final 13 seconds.
Following Pabre, Bulla Farias added six points with Ian Malabe and Joel Soriano each contributed four points.
The smaller and shorter Papalina boys relied on the long ball to get over the taller Westside defenders closing off the paint.
Trey Taba netted five treys for his 15 points, with C.J. Cromartie adding one in the fifth period and Gunner Burkman firing one in the second period.
Burkman finished with five points and Taylon Yadao ignited four second-half points.
• Earlier in the night, Monique Lorenzo fired off 11 first-half points to lead the Kaulupono Division 3 girls to a 38-10 victory over the Tiger girls.
This was Kaulupono’s second victory in as many nights, Lorenzo getting help from Taegan Keep who added eight points, Tatiana Acain and Tiana “TJ” Ramos each finished with five points, Ramos launching a three-ball in the fifth period.
Dawn Serapio and China Yasay rounded out the win with a pair a piece.
Damia Cain topped the Tigers’ scoring with five points, Sienna Martin-Oldfield and Summer Mead each adding pairs and Olivia Gegen getting a digit.
• The Hanapepe Bomb Squad rebounded from its nail-biting loss Monday night to Team Central and took a 39-14 win over the Kamikaze Tuesday night.
Christopher Aban led the Hanapepe scoring with 14 points followed by Bryan Ingeniero and Richard Alop each adding six points.
Thomas Apilado Jr. finished with five points, Corey Agena fired off the only trey for the Bomb Squad and Lacin Montemayor finished with a pair.
Tiger Fu topped the Kamikaze scoring with four points, all dropping in the fifth period, Micah Matsunaga launched a three-ball in the final frame, Ryan Mones fired off a trey in the third period, Takeshi Komar had a pair in the opening frame and Logan Noice was one-for-two at the charity stripe.
Five games are on tap for Saturday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center starting at 9 a.m. when Team Lihue meets Kaulupono Division 3 girls followed by PBC “A” going up against Lihue “B” Division 3 boys at 10 a.m.
Team Central “W” takes on the Hanakila Division 3 boys starting at 11 a.m. followed by Westside Basketball taking on Team Central “B” at noon.
Lihue “B” will face Team Central “W” at 1 p.m. to round out the day.
