HANALEI — The condition of a 64-year-old Hanalei man injured in a two-vehicle accident Thursday has been upgraded to stable, county officials said.
The man was listed in critical condition after being admitted to Wilcox Memorial Hospital following the 3:45 p.m. wreck, which shut down Kuhio Highway in both directions for three hours. County spokesperson Sarah Blane said Monday the injured man’s condition had improved.
The accident occurred just south of Hanalei bridge.
According to police, the crash occurred when a Nissan sedan was heading down the hill toward Hanalei town and crossed the center line near the hairpin turn. The car was then struck on its passenger side by and oncoming Jeep SUV.
The driver and passenger of the SUV sustained minor injuries and did not require medical treatment. But the driver of the sedan sustained critical injuries and was transported to Wilcox Hospital.
Blane said citations haven’t been issued for either driver.
