Man arrested after trying to flee police

A wanted man was arrested Tuesday afternoon in Wailua after attempting to flee from police, according to the Kauai Police Department.

Kawai Matsusaka, 22, was captured about 2:30 p.m., after KPD officers acted on a tip that a male subject was attempting to break into an unattended vehicle parked at the foot of the Nonou Mountain trail. The area is also known as Sleeping Giant and located off Haleilio Road in Wailua Houselots.

Responding officers located and identified the suspect as Matsusaka. He was also wanted on an outstanding bench warrant.

The suspect attempted to flee and took officers on a foot chase. Additional officers from the Hanalei and Lihue district responded and located Matsusaka at the junction of Haleilio and Nonou roads about 4 p.m.

Matsusaka was arrested for the outstanding bench warrant and on new charges of first-degree attempted unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle. He is currently being held at police cellblock in lieu of $3,000.
