High surf closes North Shore beaches

LIHUE — The County of Kauai announced Friday morning that all North Shore beaches are closed to swimming, from the Hanalei Pavilion to Kee Beach, due to high surf conditions.

Ocean Safety officials report wave heights of up to 20 feet in these areas. Lifeguards will remain at the beach towers throughout the day to notify beachgoers of the closure.

All beaches will reopen as officials deem them safe for swimming. Swimmers are advised to swim at guarded beaches in Poipu and Salt Pond.

The National Weather Service has posted a High Surf Warning along all north and west facing shores on Kauai and Niihau until 6 p.m. Friday.

For up-to-date information about ocean conditions, please speak to a county lifeguard, log onto www.kauaiexplorer.com, or call the Ocean Safety Bureau at 241-4984.
