Rose and Thomas are loving and wonderful parents to their four children.
When not at school, the children are with their parents spending quality time together. Rose is looking for work and Thomas is employed at a full-time job. They are renting a two-bedroom apartment and are participants of a transitional housing program.
While their income pays for their most basic monthly needs, it will not be enough to purchase gifts for Christmas or to make a special Christmas meal. The children would like a terrific Christmas with new clothes, games, and toys. Diapers for the baby would also be a necessity. Mom and Dad are asking for assistance to purchase a turkey and all the trimmings for their holiday meal.
This family is just one of many who are seeking assistance through the Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund.
The need is great this year.
More than 600 children and adults are seeking assistance through the program. Social service agencies submitted about 275 cases for those seeking help.
The Garden Island encourages individuals, families, clubs, schools and businesses to rally behind the Christmas Fund.
Each donated dollar is recorded, accounted for and spent wisely.
Donations are distributed by Zonta Club members through gift certificates.
Only monetary donations can be accepted. Checks, payable to Zonta Club of Kauai Foundation, can be mailed to P.O. Box 3032, Lihue, HI, 96766.
An anonymous benefactor through the Hawaii Community Foundation is offering a two-to-one match for every donation to the fund up to $10,000.
Woman disabled
Diana is disabled and homeless. This year, she had two major surgeries and lost her job because she was unable to return to work. She has applied for Social Security disability benefits. Diana is on a waitlist for low-income housing. She could use a new backpack, tent, camping supplies, food and bus passes.
Nothing for Christmas
Patty is an elderly woman who moved to Kauai to help family by taking care of her grandchildren so their parents could work. When the economy failed, her children lost their jobs and her life savings were depleted. She has monthly Social Security benefits, and has applied for low-income housing. She is homeless, and could use a brand new air mattress, bedding, food and warm clothing.
