POIPU — Herb and Krystyna Noe of Kalaheo were big winners at the Doubles Winter Classic Tennis tournament, which wrapped up Sunday at the Poipu Kai Tennis Courts.
Herb Noe teamed with James Hassenyager to capture the Men’s A Flight. They defeated Chris Webster and Chris Stacey in the final match.
Krystyna, normally coordinating the tournament, teamed with Waimea High School student Lani Rae Green to capture the Women’s A Flight following a tight three-set match over Michelle Fitzgerald of Kilauea and Diana Wong of Hilo on the Big Island.
Krystyna and Green took the second set 6-2 and the third set tie-breaker 1-0 (10-3) in the finals of the Women’s A Flight.
Krystyna and Green entered the finals by getting past the team of Ronnie Wilkie and Amy McLaughlin, 6-3, 7-6 in the semifinals early Sunday morning, ahead of the mid-morning rain which delayed play until the rain clouds passed.
The rain delay caused the consolation match between Wilkie and McLaughlin and Judy Honda and Jaime Schmidt, falling to the team of Fitzgerald and Wong, 2-6, 1-6 in the semis, to be rained out.
Ginger Allen of Wailua and Janet Hathanson of Poipu took three sets to claim the title of the Women’s B Flight, defeating the duo of Mari Anderson of Princeville and Heidi Duarte of Poipu, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4).
The victory was the second time in the tournament the Allen and Hathanson pair defeated Anderson and Duarte, the first meeting on Saturday afternoon seeing another three-set slugfest end in favor of Allen and Nathanson, 7-6, 2-6, 1-0(10-6).
Another Princeville couple, Pegi Cheatum and Andrea Weston-Webb topped the Women’s C Flight after getting past the duo of Rosemarie Wong of Canada and Mimi Levenson of Belvedere, Calif., 7-5, 6-1.
Princeville player Jim Anderson teamed with Allen Miyashiro of Kalaheo to claim the Men’s B Flight following a three-set win over Adrian Alvarez of Kekaha and Bradley Cano of Hanapepe, 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5).
A Canadian player, Mike Wong, teamed with Don Willmoth of Texas to claim the Men’s C Flight after defeating Brad Cheatum and Peter Ricciardi, both from the North Shore, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (12-10) in a tight three-set slugfest.
Proceeds from the Poipu Kai Winter Doubles Classic benefits the Kauai United Way.
The next doubles tournament is scheduled for July, 2014.
