Some people, like John and James, face incredible physical challenges. Each day can be a battle, just to survive. These men hope to do more than survive. They want to live well. And you can help.
John, 23, has cerebal palsy. He uses a communication device to communicate his needs and wants. He is a very intelligent individual with dreams of writing and publishing a book about his life. In order for John to fulfill his dreams as a self-publisher, he could benefit from tutoring services. Unfortunately, he is unable to afford these services without assistance. Therefore, he would like to have some kind of funding to pay for a tutor to improve his reading and writing skills and help him get closer to his personal goal. This will help him develop his communication skills and self-determination skills.
James, 35, has infantile cerebral palsy, quadriplegia, and general convulsive epilepsy. He lives in the family home with his mother and younger brother. James has a G-tube and could use more gauze and other items he uses on a daily basis. With these items, he is able to keep his G-tube area clean and safe from infection.
Any help for these two could add cheer to their holidays.
John and James are just a few of the people who will receive assistance through The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund.
The Garden Island encourages individuals, clubs, schools and businesses to rally behind the Christmas Fund. Anyone making a donation of $500 or more can have their picture presenting the check published in TGI. Each donated dollar is carefully recorded, accounted for and spent wisely.
Donations will be distributed by Zonta Club members, who purchase gift certificates at appropriate businesses to help make wishes come true.

Help for Henry
Henry is a young man with multiple diagnosis including mental retardation, autism spectrum disorder, and ADHD. He moved to Kauai a couple of years ago from Maui to live here with his grandfather, John. His grandfather now cares for Henry full time, and Henry has been very happy with his move. John is employed as a caretaker for a property in exchange for living on the property. However, John only received minimal money in addition to his free rent.
Would love a toy
Natalie, 2, has Hydro cephalus, seizures and has a G-tube. She likes music and being with her family. Natalie would appreciate diapers and a new toy.
iPad for Roger
Roger, 20, has autistic disorder, bipolar disorder and severe intellectual disability. He currently uses the iPad at school to communicate his needs and wants. Roger has come a long way with his behaviors and communication using the iPad.
However, Roger will be aging out of school soon and will not be able to take the device with him as it is school property. Without an iPad, Roger will not be able to communicate his needs and wants and his family is unable to afford one without assistance.
