Two charged with murder in slain Kauai man case

LIHUE — Authorities in the San Francisco Bay Area arrested two men last week and charged them with murder on Monday in the death of Kauai resident Marcus Antonio Brown, according to the Bay Area News.

On Sept. 5, Brown, 29, was found dead on the back porch of an abandoned home in Hayward, Calif. The Hayward Police Department said the Lihue resident died of blunt trauma to the head.

Joseph Mataele, 22, and Sosaia Havili, 24, were arrested Thursday, after investigators gained evidence linking both suspects to the slaying, Hayward police Sgt. Mark Ormsby told the Bay Area News.

On Sept. 4, Brown, a U.S. Army veteran, arrived on a flight at Mineta San Jose International Airport in California. He was supposed to return to Kauai the next day. But his body was found 28 miles north in Hayward, according to Bay Area News.

A Hawaii woman filed a missing persons report Sept. 7 with the San Jose police, which led to the identification of Brown, originally thought to be a vagrant, Bay Area News report.

In September, The Garden Island got a hold of Hayward police, which confirmed Brown’s identity.

Originally from Virginia, Brown was a resident of Kauai since 2009.
