LIHU‘E — The inclement weather did not adversely impact the Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank’s food drive day on April 13, said Kelvin Moniz, a KIFB manager.
“We collected about $4,500 and just under a thousand pounds of food from the six collection sites,” Moniz said Tuesday.
“We did a lot better than expected, considering there was all that weather out there which kept people inside and at home.”
Moniz had set a goal of $5,000, so he was pleased with Saturday’s results.
“The weather was so bad, we had to pull a group of volunteers from one end of Kukui Grove Center because the wind was really blowing,” Moniz said.
“That put everyone just on one side of the mall.”
The food drive day is a part of the KIFB Spring Healthy Food and Fund drive going through April. The goal is 40,000 pounds of food and $40,000.
Recently, KIFB launched its Kupa‘a Kokua Kupuna program to help feed the elderly.
These programs are in addition to the emergency food requests and the needs of the participating organizations that host food pantry programs in the different communities around the island.
To contribute to the drive, drop off nonperishable food to any of the fire stations or at KIFB, 3285 Wa‘apa Road in Nawiliwili.
