PUHI — Soup’s on for Sunday from 11 a.m. through 1 p.m. at the Clayworks at Kilohana.
Traditionally held on the day of the Super Bowl, patrons to the Souper Bowl at Clayworks at Kilohana receive a hand-made ceramic bowl filled with a special soup created by the chefs at the Gaylord’s restaurant at Kilohana.
Diners are able to enjoy their culinary creation on site, or take it with them to enjoy while watching the game, or at a Super Bowl party.
“The first batch of ‘Souper Bowls’ went to glazing just this morning,” said Susan Pittman of Clayworks at Kilohana. “We’ve also gotten some phone calls about reserving their Souper Bowls.”
Reservations for the Souper Bowl can be done ahead of time, and is highly recommended due to the limited supply of handmade ceramic bowls which come filled with the special soup creation.
“This (Souper Bowl) has kind of become an annual event,” Pittman said. “We’ve already marked it in and people are looking ahead to it.”
Proceeds from Souper Bowl will benefit the Lihu‘e Lutheran Church’s Mobile Munchies program, which provides 400 weekly healthy snacks to young children.
“This year, we have a new chef at Gaylord’s and we won’t know what kind of soup is on until closer to Feb. 3,” Pittman said. “In addition to soup, the bread and rolls will be from the Bread & Deli Connection at the Kukui Grove Center,” which provides the bread for the Mobile Munchies program.
Pittman said Clayworks at Kilohana started the Souper Bowl event in 1996, a year after opening the studio at Kilohana.
“We have fun doing the event, and are thrilled that we can use the skills we have to help other people,” Pittman said. “Now, there is such a need and the Mobile Munchies program benefits so many local children.”
Pittman, who also volunteers at the Mobile Munchies program, said Lihu‘e Lutheran Church started the program in 2005 with just 36 sandwiches.
Over the years, the weekly sandwich and healthy snack program has grown to 400 munchies a week.
“We must have made at least 100,000 sandwiches since we started,” Pittman said. “We get more than 60 loaves of wheat bread from the Bread & Deli Connection to make the sandwiches.”
The Mobile Munchies program services young people from the Eastside through the Westside.
The program is available at the Thursday Kokua Soup, where Lihu‘e Lutheran Church volunteers help the Salvation Army, Lihu‘e Corps. The church also delivers to the Salvation Army, Hanapepe Corps., which, in turn, gets Mobile Munchies to Nana’s House in Waimea and the Boys & Girls Club, Waimea Clubhouse.
The B&G Club, Kapa‘a Clubhouse comes to the church to pick up their Mobile Munchies and volunteers deliver to Ho‘omana Thrift Shop in Wailua, she said.
The special Souper Bowls can be ordered ahead of time at the Clayworks at Kilohana for a $28 donation.
