KEKAHA — A fire in a storage unit owned by Andros Engineering Corporation on Sunday night caused roughly $300,000 in damage, county officials said.
No injuries were reported and Kaua‘i Fire Department inspectors are investigating the cause.
The blaze burned a utility vehicle and heavily damaged two Matson containers that formed the walls of an equipment storage area on a mixed-use property on Kekaka Road just across from the old Kekaha Sugar Mill.
The containers and much of the burned property belonged to Andros Engineering Corporation, a retrieval firm based in Paso Robles, Calif. that specializes in agriculture, mining and wastewater support.
Roger Castadio, site manager, said their six local employees were still on the job as of Tuesday.
“The fire started around 11 p.m. and it took about 45 minutes to extinguish,” said Castadio on Tuesday. “I have been up all night here at the shop.”
The Andros’ Kaua‘i project recycles the drip irrigation hoses and equipment used on some of the island’s corn fields. The fire damaged or destroyed containers containing extracting- and retrieval- related equipment and supplies.
Kaua‘i Fire Department responded to the alarm, that was reported at 11:07 p.m. on Monday, according to the county news release. Rescue 3 personnel along with firefighters from the Waimea, Hanapepe and Lihu‘e stations worked together to contain the blaze.
