LIHU‘E — The County of Kaua‘i Department of Parks and Recreation announced the start of its 2013 Youth Basketball program featuring boys and girls in the third through sixth grades.
Players are invited to participate in a basketball clinic hosted by the county’s Department of Parks and Recreation and led by former University of Hawai‘i, Hilo basketball coach Jimmy Yagi Saturday at the Kaua‘i High School gym from 9 a.m. to noon.
Coach Yagi, a UH-Hilo Vulcan Hall of Honor member, will be joined by basketball standout and current sports editor for the Hawai‘i Tribune Herald, Bill O’Rear and Daphne Honma, a former high school and collegiate basketball coach.
Open to youth in grades three through eight, the clinic will cover the fundamentals of the game of basketball, including ball handling drills, dribbling, passing and team building concepts.
A coaches clinic will follow the youngsters’ clinic from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Then on Monday, Division 2 boys (5th and 6th grades) will open the season at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center when Hanapepe takes on Papalina starting at 6 p.m. followed by the Kamikaze going up against Team Lihu‘e starting at 7 p.m.
Games are played on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
Tuesday night, the Boys Division 1 (3rd and 4th grades) open its season when the Westside takes on Papalina starting at 6 p.m. at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center. The Supersonics match up against Team Lihu‘e starting at 7 p.m.
Thursday night, the Boys Division 2 return to the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center when Team Central goes up against Hanakila, a team comprised of boys from the Hanalei-Kilauea area, starting at 6 p.m. followed by Team Lihu‘e taking on Eastside at 7 p.m.
Saturday games move to the Kilauea Neighborhood Center with four games, two Division 2 and two Division 1, on tap starting at 9 a.m.
The girls, 3rd through 5th grades, take the hardwood on Jan. 19 for the first time when Kaulupono takes on the Westside at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
