The Kaua‘i Hoe Wa‘a will open its 2013 season with the first official points race on Jan. 6 from Po‘ipu to Port Allen.
Paddlers will launch at noon from the Po‘ipu Beach Park near the Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club and race to Port Allen. A short course will start at the Kukui‘ula Small Boat Harbor and finish at Port Allen. Lunch will follow at Port Allen.
Novice and experienced paddlers are welcomed to the events, said Tom Thompson of the Kaua‘i Hoe Wa‘a.
Kaua‘i Hoe Wa‘a, associated with the Kaua‘i YMCA, is an outrigger canoe racing association, hosting approximately 14 open ocean events each season for OC-1, OC-2, Surfski and Stand Up Paddlers.
The calendar closes with the prestigious Kaua‘i World Challenge, a 34-mile relay event featuring an international field of paddlers scheduled for Apr. 27.
