Motorcyclist dies in traffic crash

HANAPEPE — A motorcyclist died Wednesday evening following a traffic collision near the Kaumuali‘i Highway/Puolo Road junction in Hanapepe, according to a news release from the Kaua‘i Police Department.

He has been identified as 25-year-old Brian Cesario of Kalaheo.

According to a preliminary report, Cesario was traveling east on Kaumuali‘i Highway at around 6:30 p.m. when he collided with a westbound Ford F150 making a left turn from the highway onto Puolo Road.

Medics transported Cesario to Kaua‘i Veteran’s Memorial Hospital where he later died of his injuries. Cesario was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.

The 71-year-old male driver of the Ford pickup reported minor injuries.

Kaumuali‘i Highway, in the vicinity of Mile Marker 17, was closed in both directions for roughly four hours. Traffic was diverted onto Hanapepe Road until the highway could be reopened shortly before 11 p.m.

The crash remains under investigation. This is the eighth traffic fatality on Kaua‘i this year.
