WAIMEA — Kekaha’s Got Talent will tackle Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” this month with a series of staged readings on the Westside.
Presented by the Rainbow Road Crew, the main performance is set for Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. at the historic Waimea Theater.
Additional readings are scheduled for Dec. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the Storybook Theatre in Hanapepe, Dec. 16 at 4:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s Church in Kekaha and Dec. 19 at 6 p.m. at the Neighborhood Center in Kekaha.
Director Vivian Rose said she is a big fan of the original version of “A Christmas Carol,” which Dickens wrote in approximately six weeks in 1843. The story follows the grumpy Ebenezer Scrooge as he is visited by the spirit of Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future.
“It changed the face of Christmas,” Rose said. “The script is so beautiful and descriptive.”
By listening to Dickens’ original words, Rose said the audience will feel the magic of the story, which is all about showing love to one another.
“We’re going to be transported to that time.”
The performances are made possible by a grant from the Kekaha Host Community Benefits program. The County of Kaua‘i established the KHCB Fund in 2008 to compensate the community for hosting the Kekaha Landfill.
Rose said the shows include a few surprise actors, including Kaua‘i’s famous Santa Claus, Phil Worwa, as the Ghost of Christmas Present and Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. as Fezziwig.
“(Carvalho) will be singing and dancing,” Rose said.
The Dec. 22 staged reading will include a small raffle and those who bring a food donation will be entered to win a prize turkey.
Following December’s run of shows, Rose said Kekaha’s Got Talent will take the month of January to regroup before starting back up in February.
“What this is meant to be is an art group for the Westside where young people and older people can contribute their own ideas and write their own plays,” Rose said.
Kekaha’s Got Talent meets from 2 to 9 p.m. every Wednesday at the Kekaha Neighborhood Center and offers a variety of free activities for children and adults to develop and show off their skills, including theatre, music and dance. Everyone is welcome to participate.
