Commercial and hobbyist Kaua‘i beekeepers were asked to participate in a study conducted by the Kaua‘i Community College Apiary Program to determine the density and distribution of the Small Hive Beetle, a potentially devastating pest first detected on Kaua‘i in May 2012. Since then, it has been identified in hives from Kalaheo to Kilauea. The study will help the research team recommend control methods that Kaua‘i beekeepers can use to mitigate the harmful effects of the pest. Beekeepers interested in participating should contact Jimmy Trujillo at 346-7725 or Jin-Wah Lau at terilau@hawaii.edu.

Focus on Faculty
Originally from Germany, Dr. Michael Hannawald came to Hawai‘i nine years ago to work on Maua Kea as an astrophysicist. He joined the KCC faculty just over a year ago. He tries to integrate his experience from various areas of physics and astronomy research into his teaching at KCC to prepare students for their transfer to other campuses nationwide. He says, “I try to give students hands-on experience rather than just learning out of a textbook. This is more exciting and has longer-lasting effects.”
John Constantino, assistant professor in counseling and student affairs, is a graduate of Kaua‘i Community College, the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa and Gonzaga University. John provides leadership advice and training to 20 clubs and organizations at KCC. He says this of his job: “Everyone has the potential to become a positive leader. It’s through learning leadership styles and modeling from leaders of the past that students can evolve as leaders themselves.”
• Greg Shepherd is an Associate Professor of Music at Kaua‘i Community College. ‘News from KCC’ will return the first Friday of February.
