KEKAHA — “Re-Use, Re-Cycle, Re-Create” is the theme of Thursday’s second annual art competition being held in celebration of America Recycles Day.
Waste Management, in coordination with the national recycling effort, is challenging students at the Kekaha Elementary School to “re-create” recycled materials into a project which can be reused as something else, states a Waste Management release.
The art competition will have students work as a team in their individual classroom and put their investigative skills to work while researching ideas for their creative projects, said John Ruiz, Waste Management district manager for the Kekaha Landfill.
Once the individual work is complete, each participating classroom will select one art project to represent their team.
“We organized this art competition to help students learn about the importance of recycling and reusing materials in a fun and creative manner,” Ruiz said in the release.
“The students will not only learn an important lesson about recycling, but also learn that many items can be turned into new uses to help conserve our natural resources and use our landfill space more wisely.”
Projects from the Kekaha School challenge are due Dec. 3 and will be on display at the school from Dec. 3 through 7. The winners will be announced during the school’s Winter Celebration scheduled for Dec. 8.
During last year’s challenge, art displays filled the school’s library and enthralled the large crowd of parents and community participants at the Winter Celebration.
Waste Management, a Houston, Texas-based firm, operates the Kekaha Landfill facility on Kaua‘i.
