‘Outstanding caliber’
We have known Myles Emura very well for the past four-and-a-half years. It is our pleasure to say, unequivocally, that he possesses excellent character and conducts himself with the highest degree of integrity.
There have been many instances wherein we have witnessed Myles on the job as a lifeguard at Po‘ipu Beach Park. Often times, we would notice that Myles was the only lifeguard to proactively engage with tourists on the beach. He was the only lifeguard on duty to make the effort to ensure that tourists knew about factors relevant to their safety without those tourists needing to ask questions first.
Time and time again over the years, tourists return to Po‘ipu asking to see Myles. Clearly, Myles takes his job very seriously, yet demonstrates an obvious love for his job as well. He has definitely built up a reputation as someone people want to connect with every time they visit Po‘ipu.
On top of being a true professional on the job, Myles has shown himself to be a very generous person off the clock. On more occasions than we can count, we have seen him offer to guide snorkel trips after hours for children of visiting tourists, not for pay, but for the pure joy of sharing these experiences with them. This is certainly not part of his job description, but an excellent example of the caring, compassionate and selfless person that he is.
It is refreshing to see someone have such clear priorities in life, namely the importance of sharing his love of life and giving back to others. Myles is a true joy and inspiration to know, and we proudly stand behind him as a man of outstanding caliber.

Myles creates smiles
People love to visit Po‘ipu, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Many people come back to visit year after year. Tourists lay on the beach, wade, swim, snorkel, fish, walk, surf, kayak, paddle board. The list goes on.
One of the reasons people love this beach is that they feel safe to enjoy all these recreational activities. It takes many years experience to get to know the people who come back every year or every few years.
Myles Emura in his many years experience knows the best way to handle emergency situations. He also has the ability to reach out to visitors and make their experience special.
In the time that I have known Myles I see how his personality immediately puts smiles on people’s faces. It is that unexpected friendliness that warms people’s hearts and creates memories that last a lifetime.
Tourists know that they can come back and visit this special person year after year.
He has been an asset to his lifeguard station in ways that have not been recorded, but are important to the Kaua‘i beach experience

Vendors are responsible
The letter entitled “Money-driven grief” requires comment. Those of us who have not experienced the loss of a loved one in an “accident” cannot imagine how survivors feel. However, as a critical incident responder, I can tell you that money is not the motivation in filing lawsuits.
It is the sad acknowledgment that much of our world runs on profit. A trial — whether criminal or civil — is a search for the truth. The heart-broken question following death or injury is often “How did this happen? How can we keep it from happening again?”
Here, questions might include the following: Was the renter required to show any competency to operate the jet ski? Did he receive any instruction or have to demonstrate he could handle the ski? Was the equipment itself in top working order? People often assume open and obvious risks, such as the rope swingers at Kipu Falls.
However, when a vendor makes money off helping visitors assume those risks, that vendor must also take some responsibility for putting their renter and equipment out amidst the public.

Lies about Obama
After seeing “2016: Obama’s America”, I assumed viewers would see through the deceitful distortions, laugh at the leaps of illogic, and pity the paranoia of this so-called conservative who constructs a fanciful theory by ignoring reality. Now, however, I read that some folks are succumbing to his propaganda.
Please, research his baseless allegations. The lies flew so fast, I could not have taken notes, even if I thought it necessary, but here are three examples:
Dinesh D’Souza suggests that national debt has arisen due to deficit spending during Obama’s term. In truth, our national debt skyrocketed under Reagan and Bush-the-Elder, then was curbed by Clinton’s balanced budgets, and again exploded under Bush-the-Son. This huge debt was caused by series of wars and deep tax cuts. A balanced budget is now impossible without restoring efficient taxation rates. Even so, and in the face of Republican obstruction, Obama has curbed the rate of growth of the debt.
D’Souza claims that “Obamacare” is intentionally designed to ruin America. In truth, the Affordable Care Act has already brought relief to millions, is saving seniors money on prescriptions, and is calculated to reduce annual deficits, saving more than it will cost over the next decade.
D’Souza accuses Obama of reducing nuclear weapons for the purpose of weakening America so that Muslims can take over. In truth, reducing nuclear warheads has been a long-term (Reagan and before), bi-partisan, multi-lateral agreement designed for enhanced security.
If you see this movie, you will witness other lies that are easy to disprove.
