The Kaua‘i High School boys wobbled on the opening round, tying Kapa‘a with a 715 pinfall, but roared back with a pair of 800 games to take the third Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation bowling match Wednesday with a 2,390 pinfall for 10.5 points.
Kaua‘i’s Darcie Vea was consistent in the high 140s and was joined by Jaffia Cybele Ballesteros, who rolled a day’s high of 150 in Game 2 to lead the Red Raider ladies to a 2,033 pinfall and 12 points after nailing top honors in three games.
Waimea’s Lacie Montemayor continued to set the pace for the Menehune, rolling a high 152 in Game 1 toward a total 1,766 team pinfall and eight points.
Kapa‘a girls finished with a 1,644 pinfall for four points, the Warriors’ pace being set by Angelika Celia Questin, who rolled her best 166 in Game 1 and getting help from Alex Thompson, who soared to a 143 in Game 2 following a wobbly Game 1 and ended the day with a 104 in Game 3.
Following Vea and Ballesteros, Maricar Bersamira rolled a high 148 in Game 2 toward the Kaua‘i girls’ best round at a 684 pinfall. Malia Garcia joined the leaders in Game 3 with a 148 toward the Kaua‘i girls’ 672 pinfall.
Following Montemayor, Waimea girls got strong support from Selena Perez-Suniga whose best roll came in Game 2 with a 137, just a pin shy of Montemayor, toward the team’s 625 pinfall, its best game of the day.
Janelle Papa added a 132, her best roll of the day, in Game 2.
Kapa‘a’s boys were on fire in Game 1, Clarence Sembrano, Jr. having his best roll of the day at 230, dropping to 170 and 154 in games two and three, respectively, but setting the pace for the Warrior men.
Drew Lopez Nishikuni fired his best game in the opening frame, rolling a 156 and adding a 131 in Game 3. Kawika Wellington had his best game in the third match, rolling a 147 following a 128 and 114 in games one and two, respectively.
Randy Ilorets, rolling a 150 in the opening frame compared to his 171 and 238 in games two and three, respectively, set the pace for the Kaua‘i boys.
He got help from Ian Luis who rolled a 209 in Game 3 following rolls of 146 and 136 in games one and two, respectively.
Derman Alao was a solid No. 3 for the Kaua‘i boys, ending with rolls of 162, 166 and 177. William Jordan Balbin joined Alao with a 166 in Game 2 along with Keoki Palau who netted a 164 in Game 2, a level above is Game 1 120 and Game 3 133.
The KIF bowlers take a break due to the school break this week, returning to the Lihu‘e Bowling Center on Oct. 11 for the KIF match No. 4 starting at 5:30 p.m.
