LIHU‘E – “A Trek through Nepal” is Max Nadiero’s latest book, and probably his most captivating.
Released by Dorrance Publishing Co., Inc. this year, “A Trek through Nepal” captures the essence of a mid-life adventure to the Himalayan Mountains of Nepal through the serious yet amusing narrative of Max Nadiero himself. Nadiero has the power to fill our senses with the colorful descriptions of his fellow travelers, the Sherpa guides and the porters who are hired for a pittance to carry their luggage through jungles, over treacherous mountains and across raging rivers.
The author’s fellow trekkers come from diverse walks of life and are here for various reasons, but most are wishing to prove their capabilities and their spirit of adventure. Alistair, a boisterous British officer who travels to the Himalayas to recruit mercenaries, leads the group from diverse countries through this incredible journey, adding a sense of good measure to crossing borders from all corners of the world.
Being the trekker, authoring the book allows the narrator for a personal tone that keeps the reader engaged in the group’s adventure rather than just Nadiero’s. The fact that the only voice the reader relies on is Nadiero’s does not cloak the subtle craftsmanship as Nadiero succeeds in not making himself any more endearing than the other characters. This mastery of style adds consequential life to the story whose subject could have fizzled after a few pages with a less skilled writer. Indeed all characters are quite delectable because of their distinctive quirks and smarts. Nadiero knows how to tell a story in an economical way that makes this page-turner seem much bigger than it really is, in the image of the vast enterprise these eclectic characters are experiencing.
While rather out of shape when he initially begins this journey, Nadiero pushes on and becomes increasingly stronger and fitter as the trek progresses. He feels a sense of accomplishment as he moves from dead last in the ranks to the fourth place spot.
In the end, there is pride from trying something outside one’s comfort zone that tests one’s mettle, one’s resolve and one’s human strength, pushing oneself to one’s limits. These are memories anyone can cherish the rest of one’s life.
