LIHU‘E — The Salvation Army Lihu‘e Corps bid farewell to two of its most dedicated volunteers earlier this week.
Frances Apuna and Nathan Apuna retired after 12 years of service to the Lihu‘e-based organization, according to a press release.
Frances retired Tuesday from her position as thrift store manager.
She started with The Salvation Army in 1998 as a volunteer, sorting through donated items. She then worked part-time in 2000 as a driver and production worker, and eventually worked her way up to manager.
Frances said she plans on spending her retirement with family, but she still will support The Salvation Army.
Nathan was also recognized by the nonprofit organization for his 12 years of service.
He started as a production worker at the thrift store before working his way up to thrift store manager. After a brief break from service, Nathan took over the responsibilities of the Kokua Kitchen in Lihu‘e, where he has prepared thousands of meals for the soup kitchen, Thanksgiving Community Luncheon, volunteer luncheons and other banquets.
Nathan plans to dedicate himself to music, while singing and teaching children about Hawai‘i music.
The Salvation Army in Lihu‘e serves the people of Kaua‘i through the Kokua Kitchen, Food Pantry and various youth groups.
