HANAPEPE — Michele Bane, the Kaua‘i Marine Mammal Response Program coordinator for the National Marine Fisheries Service, will offer an introduction to the marine mammals of Kaua‘i with an emphasis on ways people can help when marine mammals become stranded at or near the shoreline.
Bane, the Kaua‘i coordinator for the past two years, will be speaking Thursday at the Hanapepe Public Library at the free Hawaiian Marine Environment series on “Marine Mammal Stranding Response in Hawai‘i” from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Born and raised in New Orleans, Bane studied marine biology in Florida and lived there for eight years before moving to Hawai‘i in 2005.
She has worked with marine mammals for the past 10 years as a trainer, animal care specialist, stranding response volunteer and research assistant.
In her current position, Bane helps care for Kaua‘i’s marine mammals and shares their stories with the community.
The Hawaiian Marine Environment lecture series is sponsored by the Friends of the Hanapepe Public Library.
