LIHU‘E — County officials reported that the e-waste recycling events recently held on Kaua‘i were very successful.
Approximately 852 residents and 78 businesses participated in the events and submitted assorted electronic items for recycling.
“It is very encouraging that Kaua‘i residents turned out in such large numbers to properly dispose of potentially hazardous material, which has helped to preserve precious space at our landfill,” said Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr.
Seven shipping containers were filled with materials collected at three drop-off points: Kaua‘i Mini-Golf in Kilauea; ‘Ele‘ele Shopping Center; and Vidinha Stadium in Lihu‘e.
As a result, roughly 80 tons of electronics were diverted from the Kekaha Landfill and are now in transit to Sim’s Recycling Solutions in California, where they will be dismantled and their components will be recycled or reused.
The e-waste recycling events were sponsored by the county, Pacific Corporate Solutions and Sim’s Recycling Solutions.
