Among the many lively businesses at Kukui’ula Village, Merriman’s Fish House, located at 2829 Ala Kalanikaumaka St. in Koloa, is home to specialty cocktails and martinis which are “OMG” spectacular.
Tiare Shim, a server and bartender at Merriman’s since its opening in 2009, welcomed Kaua’i Times with local-style flare. Shim said all cocktails, including the OMG Mojito, were created in house.
“Basically, a bunch of us bartenders brainstormed these drinks,” Shim explained. “The OMG Mojito is one of our most popular drinks. It is very refreshing with a hint of our house-made ginger beer.”
Shim painstakingly mixed the OMG Mojito for our pleasure and gave the skinny on the ingredients and how it is made: “The OMG Mojito has fresh mint leaves, fresh squeezed orange juice and fresh lime juice. All the ingredients are mottled with Koloa Light White Rum, shaken, then it is topped off with Merriman’s homemade ginger beer and a splash of club soda.”
The OMG Mojito is priced at $9. It truly lives up to its name. At first sip, the presence of mint leaves, lime and orange juices are obvious. Then, a cool, refreshing hint of the hand-crafted ginger beer makes its way through all the ingredients and penetrates the taste buds.
Two other drinks that Shim mentioned are Merriman’s Kaua’i Tai and Koloa’s Merri Mango. The Merriman’s Kaua’i Tai is priced at $10. It is a premium version of a classic Mai Tai, served with local light and dark Koloa rum and fresh juices. The Koloa’s Merri Mango is priced at $9. It is mixed with Koloa Gold Rum and mango sweetness.
