Marc Valentin of KQNG Radio Group, County Engineer Larry Dill, County Deputy Engineer Lyle Tabata and County Planning Director Michael Dahilig were recognized for their support of Get Fit Kaua‘i during the group’s annual meeting.
“These men are changing the way we do business,” Brody said. “They are community-minded and are going above and beyond the call of duty to ensure changes made have the community’s best interest at heart. We cannot help but benefit from their efforts.”
Joy Anne Osterhout said 73 people attended the annual meeting on March 30 at the Kaua‘i Beach Resort, including Kaua‘i County Managing Director Gary Heu and Kaua‘i County council members JoAnn Yukimura, KipuKai Kuali‘i, Nadine Nakamura and Mel Rapozo. Also on hand were Kaua‘i District Health Officer Dr. Dileep Bal and Kaua‘i Community College Chancellor Helen Cox.
Get Fit Kaua‘i programs that were praised included Safe Routes to Schools Walk to School Days at four schools including Kilauea, Kapa‘a, St. Catherine’s and Kalaheo. Other Safe Routes to School achievements include a Kaua‘i County Council resolution and the addition of a Safe Routes to School staff person at the Department of Education.
A Farm to Keiki Preschool curriculum is being piloted at 19 pre-schools on the island, along with a survey of grocery stores regarding the identification of Kaua‘i Grown produce. Nine stores reached an agreement to promote Kaua‘i Grown produce through improved signage and labeling and the implementation of Electronics Benefits Transfer programs at four farmers’ markets on Kaua‘i. This program allows Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients to buy locally-grown, healthy produce.
