PUHI — The University of Hawai‘i board of regents Thursday joined Kaua‘i Community College officials for the opening of the college’s new Ho‘ouluwehi, the Sustainable Living Institute of Kaua‘i.
KCC Chancellor Helen Cox was joined by Ho‘ouluwehi Director Eric Knutzen in hosting the regents and other dignitaries following the regents’ only public meeting on the island.
“Although the focus of the institute will remain local, it will also invite mutually beneficial state, national and international collaborations,” Cox said in a news release.
“This is an exciting moment for the college. It is both the culmination of intense work since 2009 and the beginning of a remarkable journey in which we will provide our students opportunities to engage in exciting work in many aspects of sustainability, while at the same time provide very real solutions for the Kaua‘i community,” she said.
The opening ceremony for the institute was just part of the agenda of the University of Hawai‘i regents, who are on Kaua‘i for a series of meetings at Kaua‘i Community College.
Board president M.R.C. Greenwood said this is the board’s the first meeting of the new year.
He and other board members said they were delighted to begin the year with a return to Kaua‘i.
