The effect of genetically engineered foods on health and the environment is the topic of a free dinner and film presentation later this month in Kapa‘a.
GMO Free Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i SEED and the Kaua‘i Beekeepers Association is inviting the public to attend its community discussion at 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Jan. 27 at The Children of the Land in the Kaua‘i Village Shopping Center, 4-831 Kuhio Highway No. 332, Kapa‘a.
“It will be a nice chance to be together, share a meal, celebrate the successes of 2011 and organize and activate for 2012,” Jeri Di Pietro of GMO (Genetically Modified) Free Kaua‘i stated in a press release. “Let’s unite to create awareness and inspire change for a healthier island and a better world for our children and grandchildren.”
In addition to speakers and a Q&A session, the groups will show the film “Living Downstream, ” the story of ecologist and cancer survivor Sandra Steingraber’s study of cancer and what she believes are its links to pesticides.
The discussion will include Kaua‘i industries that conduct genetically engineered experiments using chemicals such as Round Up, 2-4-D, Atrazine and Clorithiadin, organizers said.
The film is dedicated to the memory of Rachel Carson and her 1962 book “Silent Spring.”
Carson, who died from cancer, is credited with establishing the modern day environmental movement by shedding light on the effect of industrial pollution.
The meeting will include remarks by Di Pietro and Jimmy Trujillo of the Kaua‘i Beekeepers Association.
A speaker from the Waimea community will address the lawsuit filed in 5th Circuit Court against DuPont and Pioneer Hybrid in Waimea and Kekaha, the news release stated.
The ahi poke bento dinner from Koloa Fish Market will be provided by local farmers and merchants. Other food will be prepared by local farmers.
Sponsors include GMO Free Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i SEED and the Kaua‘i Beekeepers Association with support from Ceres Trust.
