Toshiyuki Hirabayashi died peacefully in Burlingame, Calif., on Jan. 1, 2012, at age 96. He was born in Irvington (now Fremont), Calif., on Feb. 9, 1915. He resided on Kaua‘i from 1954 through 2004, when he and his wife moved to Burlingame. He was principal at Ko’olau Elementary, Kaumakani Elementary, Kekaha Elementary, and Waimea High and Elementary School. He was a curriculum specialist in the district office prior to his retirement in 1977.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Midori; son, Glen (Donna) Hirabayashi and their daughters, Ashley and Amy; son, Dean (Debby) Hirabayashi and their children, Kristin and Michael; daughter, Joan (Richard) Reichard and their daughters, Midori (Jason) Sliger and Aiko Reichard; son, Mark Hirabayashi; great granddaughter Evangeline Sliger and sister Mary Sakai.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7, at the Mountain View Japanese Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 195 N. Rengstorff Ave., Mountain View, CA 94043.
Flora Cortez
Flora Nunes Cortez of Lihu‘e died at home on Dec. 30, 2011 at the age of 78. Born in South Kona, Hawai‘i on Sept. 26, 1933, she retired as a waitress from Tip Top Café.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Hadir Cortez, and daughter, Florenda Jean Cortez.
She is survived by her son, Dennis Cortez; her daughter, Peggy Salba-Honnet; six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 14, at Aloha Church with visitation from 10 a.m. and services celebrated at 10:30 a.m. .
Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home assisted the Cortez family with arrangements.
Ben Tangalin
Ben Buenaventura Tangalin of Kapa‘a died peacefully at Garden Isle Health Care on Dec. 23, 2011, at the age of 87. Born in Kapa‘a on Oct. 13, 1924, he retired as a landscape architect.
He was preceded in death by his son, Steve Tangalin.
He is survived by his children, Fred (Carol) Tangalin, Leonard Tangalin, Leroy Tangalin, Gloria Reed, Yolanda (Scott) Kurihara, Nena (Bill) Johnson; brother, Johnny Tangalin; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and his Small Town Coffee family.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 7, beginning at 3 p.m. at Small Town Coffee in Kapa‘a at the Kaua‘i Products Fair.
Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home assisted the Tangalin family with arrangements.
