took two of three divisions in the Junior Varsity and Varsity, Saturday as the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation paddling season got under way at the Wailua River.
The Warriors, holding off challenges by the Kaua‘i Red Raiders, captured top honors in the Boys and Mixed divisions of the JV and the Girls and Boys of the varsity class.
Kaua‘i High School picked up top honors in the JV Girls and varsity Mixed divisions, the Red Raiders nailing the Mixed division on a solid 3:46.93 paddle over Kapa‘a (3:58.75) and Waimea (4:12.42) in the finals.
In the JV Girls race, the Red Raiders’ fastest team crossed the half-mile course on a 4:19.61, the JV Warrior wahine’s fastest team crossing in 4:35.71 and Waimea not fielding a team.
But Kapa‘a rebounded in the JV boys race, its No. 2 team crossing the half-mile course on a 4:13.37 following the disqualification of its top team who crossed on a 3:56.99 paddle.
Kaua‘i’s top JV Boys team made the half-mile run on a 4:32.32 followed by a Kawaikini team crossing at 4:37.67.
Kapa‘a also nailed the JV Mixed race when its top team crossed at 4:09.14 followed by Kaua‘i’s top JV Mixed team crossing at 4:14.53 and Waimea ending at 4:35.16.
Kapa‘a varsity teams held off strong challenges by Kaua‘i in both the Girls and Boys races, the top Warrior wahine crossing the one-mile final on a 4:09.37 chased by Kaua‘i at 4:11.96 and the Menehune right behind at 4:13.71.
The Warrior varsity Boys slipped across the line of the one mile course on a 3:44.66 challenged just a second back by Kaua‘i at 3:45.86 and the Menehune at 3:47.17.
The KIF regatta continues Saturday starting at 10 a.m. at the Wailua River.
